About the blogger

Tbilisi, Georgia 2008. Me looking outside the window of my Georgian language teacher's flat. I spent the summer of 2008 in Tbilisi, Georgia learning the Georgian language.
Journalist. Native Detroiter. World Traveler-especially Eastern Europe. Aspiring novelist. Russian and Georgian speaker. Intellectually curious. All of this is me.
And then some.
But most importantly, I am a photojournalist who prides himself on learning beyond my comfort zone and background to get a better understanding of those who don’t share my same views on faith, race, politics or any other subject that’s potentially divisive. Therefore, I use everyday (or at least I try) to learn something new about my new home with the power of my Canon camera.
In this case, my new home is New York City. I’m a Midwesterner, but I have family roots in the city. I learned, via a Facebook search in September 2009, that my father, who I never met before, was a New Yorker, I moved here in December of 2010 after completing my photojournalism project in Ukraine as a Fulbright Scholar. Now I am freelancing as a multimedia reporter in the New York area (or anywhere that pays). Before that, I earned a master’s degree in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and a second master’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois. A proud HBCU (historically black college and university) graduate, I earned my bachelor’s degree in English from Philander Smith College. My world travels have taken me to countries such as Georgia where I served in Peace Corps, Ukraine, Romania, Senegal and many others.
During my free time, I hit the streets of this city photographing and reporting on the people who make this great metropolis tick. Most importantly, I go to the places that most don’t venture to–the places that tend to be the most culturally rich and interesting! And when I get there, I talk to the people and learn a thing or two. Then I post those visual stories on this blog, hoping to attract my readers to where I’ve been.
I hope you enjoy tagging along with me as I explore my new adoptive home.
If you have some interesting story ideas for me or places that would be nice to photograph, let me know. I just might blog about it!

This blog captures the essence of brown and Black culture as defined by the peoples that live and thrive in the urban concrete jungle. What is clear here are the huge ranges of colors of bronzed skin in a back drop of barrio earth tones that pop with Latin colors and African beats that tell of brothers from far away places who still carry that sound, that vibe, those beats—love and strength and heart are everywhere…this place is very much alive, like the memories of a warm summers nite in the city….I will never forget as looking here I can be refreshed…and reminded of the beauty of the brown skin I am in—it feels so good!

Terrell,
Great images here that are beautifully shared. Thanks for bringing others alongside you as you discover ideas, themes, issues that could be divisive. With how you shoot them and share them, maybe you can make us all more tolerant and inclusive.
